The design of the programmable machine was invented by Charles Babbage. He English mechanical engineer, and polymath.  Programs and data were to be fed into the machine through punched cards, a method that was common at the time for controlling mechanical looms like the Jacquard. The computer would have a printer, a curve plotter, and a bell for output. The computer could also punch numbers onto cards, which could then be read later. The Engine had an arithmetic logic unit, control flow in the form of conditional branching and loops, and integrated memory, making it the first Turing-complete general-purpose computer architecture. It was a century ahead of its time when it was built. Many of the parts for his computer had to be handcrafted, which posed a significant challenge for a system with thousands of components.
